The donkey sanctuary
Learn all about donkeys and how they are put to work by humans, as well as discovering the best way to care for them.
How about a holiday with a difference: spending time with an animal-welfare initiative? For those who love donkeys and travellers with kids, this is the perfect break. You’ll visit the facilities where this NGO protects and cares for the many donkeys they rescue after the animals have been abandoned or abused.
The Refugio del Burrito invites you into this animal haven for a trip around the farm; we’ll tell you about the donkey’s history, how they are cared for, some of their most remarkable stories, and the difference between donkeys, mules and horses.
There are also other activities on offer, such as workshops on interacting with donkeys and feeding the animals, a gymkhana and a drawing class.
Little ones will especially enjoy learning how to feed and care for the animals, while getting to know the countryside better.
The Refugio del Burrito, in the north of Málaga province, was created in 2003 and is a subsidiary of The Donkey Sanctuary, which was founded in Britain in 1969 and is now an important international organisation dedicated to protecting these animals all over the world.
