Visit a community garden
Carratraca te aguarda para descubrir sus aguas, muy apreciadas por las civilizaciones que han pasado por este rincón a lo largo de los siglos
One of the most enriching and useful ways to spend your holidays is getting to know the traditional community gardens that have blossomed into fully-fledged ecosystems and make it easier for people to eat local, seasonal fruit and vegetables.
But how do community gardens and allotments work? What can we grow there? How many dishes can we make with the produce we get from them?
You’ll be surprised when you discover how much the earth is able to produce for you and feel more connected to the land. Visits to local allotments or community gardens raise awareness about rural culture and demonstrate the value of maintaining these practices, which can benefit society as we search for healthier ways to live and more nutritious ways to eat.
Visitors will be able to see working community gardens and meet the people who work them: as well as a genuine experience of local life, this is a way of learning about how humanity has survived over the ages by reaping the benefits offered by the earth.
In addition to the visit to the community garden, the experience also includes lunch in a local person’s house. There you’ll be able to try dishes made using ingredients with zero food miles, meaning that they were harvested in the local area, to use in traditional recipes such as stews containing various types of meat and vegetables [cocidos, potajes and guisos], preceded by a fresh garden salad and home-made cured meat and sausages.
Other typical products on offer include berzas [collard greens], callos [a flavoursome tripe stew with paprika], chickpea stew, tomato soup, estofado a lo pastoril [shepherd-style stew]… delicious dishes that give you a real taste of Málaga province, finished off with home-made desserts, including seasonal local fruit. Join us to enjoy tasty produce harvested fresh from the soil!
